The UK government is committing £10m over four years to the development of cyber security technologies, the secretary of state for DCMS Oliver Dowden is due to announce later today at London Tech Week.

Nine grant winners have been selected for the Digital Security by Design programme, with pitches for technologies that will strengthen digital infrastructure and make devices more resilient to cyber attacks.

“We have a world-class cyber security sector and together we are working hard to make sure the UK is the safest place to work, connect and live online,” said Dowden in a statement. “With government support these projects will build cutting-edge, secure technologies that will give people and businesses further confidence in our digital services and help weaken the threat of cyber attackers.”

Among the winning research projects is the University of Southampton’s HD-Sec solution, which targets security vulnerabilities in software design that could be exploited by hackers.

Another team at the University of Glasgow is working on AppControl, which focuses on state-of-the-art microprocessors that ensure sure vital systems that could be deployed in cars, medical robots or nuclear power plants remain secure.

Each team will create working prototype of their solution in order to demonstrate its value.

The funding forms part of the government’s R&D investment – which its committed to increase by 2.4 per cent of GDP by 2027.

An earlier phase of the initiative yielded Capability Hardware, a microprocessor technology with in-built safeguards that is appropriate for a range of devices – from super computers to smartphones.
